A mandate (`mdt_*`) is a payer's consent to let you charge their saved card while they're away, within the terms they accepted: the amount, how many charges, what for, and until when. A [setup intent](https://docs.natural.com/guides/concepts/setup-intents.md) creates one. Pass its ID as `mandateId` to charge or [hold](https://docs.natural.com/guides/concepts/payment-intents.md#holds) the card.

## Read a mandate

[Get the mandate](https://docs.natural.com/api-reference/mandates/get-mandate.md) to see its terms, the card, and its `status`:

* `active`: you can charge or hold under it.
* `consumed`: a `singleUse` mandate was charged.
* `expired`: its `validUntil` passed.
* `revoked`: you or the payer's bank ended it.

## Revoke a mandate

When a payer asks you to stop charging their card, [revoke the mandate](https://docs.natural.com/api-reference/mandates/revoke-mandate.md). It refuses new charges and holds from then on. A hold that's already open stays open: release it by canceling its payment intent.

A subscription's mandate can't be revoked here. Cancel the subscription instead.

## Events

`mandate.created` fires when a mandate is created, `mandate.updated` when it's used up or expires, and `mandate.revoked` when it's revoked.
